2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Hires
The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our fans.
The trust in this project grows every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of the team. Following a period of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and tests that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to further news as creation continues.
